Formosa 46 is a 14.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Doug Peterson and built by
Ta Chiao and Formosa Boat Building Co. Ltd.
Designed by Doug Peterson and long acknowledged as one of the very best offshore cruising yachts, the Peterson 46 is a great design that does everything well. The extra couple of feet over the 44 make a huge difference - a comfortable c shaped dinette and a full length cockpit you can sleep in for starters. True to Peterson's reputation as a racing boat designer, the Peterson 46 is well known to make fast passages. The theoretical hull speed is 8.3 knots and owners report this is possible on all points of sail given the right conditions. 180 miles per day are very attainable. She is well balanced and despite long rudder control lines reaching from her centre cockpit, the feedback at the helm is surprisingly good. The boat is relatively easy to single hand, even in a blow. And importantly, her motion at sea is comfortable.
There is much controversy about the origins of the F46, but essentially it is modeled from the Jack Kelly & Doug Peterson designed KP44. However, there are some differences in both appointments and layout between them. For example, the F46 interior trim and finish work is mostly of solid teak, instead of veneer's as in the KP44. As well as the galley arrangement, mast step position, and dinette are other examples. However, the hull shape and geometry are almost identical between the two. And for good reason, this design is renowned for its performance, stability, and sea kindly ways in passage making.
